Here at Hilton & Moss, we are incredibly honoured to present an important motor car that needs little introduction. HBC 226, the ex-Roy Salvadori and Peter Blond Jaguar XK120 Competition Roadster. Perhaps one of the most storied and well known race cars of the period, with unrivalled provenance and modern day eligibility.

HBC would be manufactured on 28th November, 1950 with chassis 660363, before being dispatched on 6th December, to Mr. Walter E. Sturgess of Leicester. Finished in its unmistakable shade of Opalescent Bronze, with a complementing Biscuit and Tan interior, a life of racing lie ahead.

By 1951, HBC would be owned by none other than future Formula 1 racer and Le Mans winner, Roy Salvadori. A young car dealer at the time, Salvadori encountered a life-threatening crash at Silverstone, racing his Frazer Nash. After a miraculous recovery, Salvadori’s inaugural race with HBC would take place on 11th August at Boreham in the William Lyons Trophy race where he would go on to finish third. The very next race that day, he would finish third again.

1952 would see a period of back-to-back racing over three months, with Salvadori taking part in eight races at venues including Castle Combe, Silverstone, Boreham and Goodwood. In seven of the eight, he would be a podium finisher, however it wasn’t until his last race on 26th July at the 10th Members Meeting, in the BARC Goodwood Handicap, that Salvadori would secure his first and only win with HBC.

By August, HBC had changed hands, having been traded with a Jaguar SS100 by Peter Blond who needed something faster, although he was yet to start his own racing career at this point. With HBC in hand, Blond’s career started just a few weeks later, racing in the 750 Motor Club 6-Hour Relay at Silverstone, finishing 4th overall. In September, Blond would also enter the Peterborough Motor Club Over 2-Litre race, again at Silverstone obtaining a podium finish in 3rd place.

Blond would continue to use HBC, both on the road and in club level racing with modest success. In 1954, he would travel with HBC to Le Mans for the 24-Hour race, where Salvadori was now part of the Aston Martin works team piloting a DB3S. With the local roads closed for the circuit, Blond decided it would be worth trying the circuit for himself, only to be stopped by the Gendarmerie. Blond would soon find himself behind the wheel of a C-Type, with HBC making way, sold by Performance Cars Ltd, Middlesex in 1955.

HBC was again sold in July 1968 by Lakeview Motors, this time as salvage, confirmed by the original bill of sale and accompanying photos in the history file. Little is known about the cars history until the car was purchased for restoration by JD Classics in 2009. HBC would be painstakingly restored back to a racing configuration with FIA compliance.

A return to the race track would take place in April 2011 at Donington Park, racing in the Woodcote Trophy, finishing 14th overall and 3rd In Class. In June, HBC took part in Le Mans Legends finishing 5th In Class. Two more Woodcote Trophy races would occur in 2012, finishing 4th In Class at Donington and 7th In Class at Brands Hatch. HBCs last race would be at Classic Le Mans, finishing 12th Overall in Plateau 2.

The next chapter for HBC, would become a series of Mille Miglia entries. The first of which as a Jaguar ‘Works’ entry with David Gandy and Yasmin Le Bon in 2013. Additional entries would follow in 2014, 2016, 2019, 2023 and most recently in 2025, making HBC a six-time entrant and more importantly, six-time finisher!

Today, HBC 226 remains highly eligible for a great variety of events. Whether that be Mille Miglia, historic racing or pride of place on the Concours lawns.
