We are delighted to present for sale this early 1972 Series 3 Land Rover, which has benefitted from a Galvanised Chassis restoration, finished in the Deep Bronze Green colour scheme with colour coded wheels and Sand Canvas. This particular Series 3 has benefitted from a host of new items during the build, as told to us by the previous keeper, which included all new brakes, new exhaust, new front and rear prop shafts, new doors, new radiator, new seats, new battery – the list goes on!
Externally, as the photos show, this Series 3 has many period features one would hope to find on a “good” Series – the front and rear mud flaps, the vintage number plates, the rear grab handles, the front and rear lamp guards, the recent set of 600×16 “Security” tyres (original size), etc etc. The recent canvas and bumper complete the look well, and there are some handy modern additions like the larger defender door mirrors, which allow superior visibility whilst driving and manoeuvring, which is welcomed. We always enjoy having a “Deep Bronze Green” in stock – similar to other famous car marques, this is very much the flagship colour scheme which launched the brand (such as Ferrari with Red, or Mercedes with Silver) – normally, if you ask someone to draw a Series Land Rover – this is what they’d come up with!
On the inside, there are three front deluxe seats, with the outer pair being high backs with integral head rests for additional comfort and safety – both outer seats benefit from inertia reel seat belts, and the central seat benefits from a lap belt. Deluxe matting is fitted to the footwells, along with door cards to the lower doors for that premium feel. The rear is currently unfitted with the exception of a load mat to the floor area – rear bench seats can be fitted for £595 which would bring seating for seven people including the driver. For now though, if you are wanting to carry your dogs, coal, a bicycle, a picnic basket, some hay, a shetland pony (we’ve seen it done!) – the whole load space is available for whatever you plan to throw in the back.
Out on the road, we often find that rebuilt Series Land Rovers feel that bit better than their original counterparts due to the fact they have been disassembled previously and “gone through” and this one is no exception to that rule. A Weber carburettor gives additional power over standard, whilst the fitment of an OEM size 600×16 set of four tyres means light steering, nippy acceleration and often superior off road performance – we find that Land Rover originally designed these Series vehicles to “skip” over the mud, rather than dig in as larger and wider tyres can do. Parabolic springs bring a superior ride too, which is welcome if you live on poor roads, off the grid or simply need to take the kids to school over the speed bumps – it delivers a pleasing period drive, enhanced by the upgrades as mentioned.
In summary then – if you are looking for a Series 3 Land Rover that has been rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis, which also benefits from MOT & Tax exemption alongside Classic Insurances, then this could be for you. If you were looking to commission a vehicle like this today, you could be in for a bill in excess of £40, 000 – and because of this, we believe at HQ that such a vehicle like this is a superb value prospect for a new owner… offering many of the same benefits without an eye watering initial bill and a long wait to take delivery!
